I am currently keeping a number of diaries, one is a sound diary and the other a bird diary. I use these diaries to inform my research at RMIT Melbourne AU. I am looking at the ambiguous reputations that some common, easily audible, highly sociable, wild, urban birds have with their human neighbours. These birds (pigeons, seagulls and crows) are universal and are both loved and hated. One result of the sound diary has been this 'crow poetry'. The poetry is inspired by the phonetic transcription of birdcalls by naturalists in field guides. The layout of the poems follows the phrasing that the birds use. These 'poems' are an attempt to document the calls of a group of crows that live close by in Coburg cemetery. The crows are the white-eyed black feathered Little Raven [Corvus mellori]. |
